Why everyone keeps talking about HBM
The memory beside the GPU is becoming as strategically important as the GPU itself.
HBM stands for high-bandwidth memory. It sits close to an accelerator and feeds it data much faster than ordinary server memory can.
That matters because modern AI chips can perform arithmetic faster than data can reach them. When the processor waits on memory, additional theoretical FLOPs do not help.
HBM addresses this by stacking memory dies and connecting them through very wide interfaces. The result is more bandwidth in less physical space—but also harder manufacturing, advanced packaging requirements, and a concentrated supply chain.
So when people talk about an “AI chip shortage,” the constraint may not be the processor die alone. It may be the memory stack beside it or the packaging capacity needed to combine them.
The useful mental model: the accelerator is an engine; HBM is the fuel line. A larger engine is irrelevant if the line cannot feed it.
